How and when did you discover yoga?

I exercise regularly with fitness videos. Back in 2001, someone suggested that I try yoga for my migraines, and so sought out a yoga video. My first one was Yoga Journal’s Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden - on VHS, of course! I was surprised that I could actually do the poses, as I’ve never been particularly flexible, even as a child. I continued practicing at home, but it was still awhile before I went to a studio—my first classes were through my town’s community center and the local JCC.

What yoga teachers have influenced you?

So many! I have a soft spot for certain video instructors such as Rodney Yee, as they were my first teachers. I have had many wonderful teachers locally and have tended to particularly connect with those who were originally trained in the Anusara tradition, including my own main teacher, Aimee Senise Conners.

What is the most rewarding part of being a yoga teacher?

I am a clinical psychologist in a addition to being a yoga instructor, and the rewards are remarkably similar to successful therapy! I especially love when students share the benefits that they have derived from yoga and when they apply what they learn in studio off the mat.

What can students expect from your classes?

Given my background as a psychologist, I place a strong emphasis on the mind-body connection. Each class revolves around a theme to enhance the process of exploration and self-discovery. I encourage my students to breathe and to be mindful of what their own bodies might need. Also expect to learn through use of props—from the standard blocks and bolsters to balls and walls!

What is a yoga pose you love and why?

Just one? I love side body stretches, so gate pose is a favorite. I also love a restful yoga practice full of restorative poses such as reclined bound angle and legs-up-the-wall. And balance poses are fun too!

What is your favorite quote?

I regularly use quotes in my yoga classes and have many favorites, but here’s one from fellow psychotherapist Carl Jung that applies well to yoga practice:

Who looks outside, dreams;
who looks inside, awakes.
